What is Astronaut Training?

Many families may hear about astronaut training for the first time as part of their child’s occupational therapy treatment. Unlike the name suggests we aren’t training your child to go to space, but trying to help your child reach an optimal vestibular function. Astronaut training targets the vestibular sensors in the inner ear which provides us with information regarding our body and movement in space, in order to promote a positive interaction with the environment. The vestibular system is essential for us to achieve and maintain appropriate physical, social, emotional, and cognitive performance throughout our life span.
